Sony has announced that they're laid off 900 employees across their studios, including the closure of its London Studio, the team behind Playstation PSVR's Blood & Truth and VR Worlds. Hermen Hulst, the head of Playstation Studios, wrote in a blog post today that not only will London Studio be closing, but there will be a reduction in both their US and UK/European based studios. On the US side of things, Insomniac Games (Spiderman 2), Naughty Dog (The Last of Us, Uncharted) as well as Sony's Technology, Creative and Support teams will face reductions in their workforce. Both Guerrilla (Horizon series) and Firesprite (Horizon: Call of the Mountain, VR Playroom) will see reductions as well. Hulst adds that these layoffs are in addition to smaller reductions in other teams across the Playstation Studios family.
While unnamed, Hult also mentioned that some projects have been canceled.
We looked at our studios and our portfolio, evaluating projects in various stages of development, and have decided that some of those projects will not move forward.
The gaming space has seen a ton of layoffs in 2023 and that trend has continued in 2024. One has to think that the video game employment space is going to get worse before it gets better as games are more and more expensive to create.
