Sony and Naughty Dog have officially announced The Last of Us Part II Remastered with a release date of 1.19.24 for the PS5.
The original sequel was released in 2020 to critical acclaim and is a personal favourite of mine. At the Game Awards, the Last of Us Part II won Game of the Year in 2020.
Some might already say it is too early for a remaster of the 2020 game, but with the HBO TV show The Last of US bringing in a new audience, I feel this is a great time to bring others into this world. This will allow those like myself who just recently platinumed The Last of Us Part I on the PS5 and wanted to, at the time, roll right into a PS5 version of The Last of Us Part II.
We can all relive Ellie and Abby's emotional journeys on the PlayStation 5 in 4K like never before. The campaign returns alongside technological improvements, new modes, and new behind-the-scenes features that will deepen your understanding of Part II's creation.
With this new version, there is a new mode called No Return, a roguelike survival mode that lets players have randomized encounters and experience the brutality of The Last of Us Part II's combat like never before.
In this mode, you will have many playable characters to choose from, including some that have never been playable in The Last of Us franchise. Every player has their traits and playstyles, so you must decide what fits your play style.
In this version of The Last of Us Part II, they have added a Guitar Free Play mode, allowing the player to strum the strings across a host of unlockable instruments, use FX pedals, and play as different characters in several in-game locations. The number of great songs people will play using this mode will be awesome.
You can turn on the director's commentary across campaign cutscenes from director Neil Druckmann, narrative lead Halley Gross, and actors Troy Baker, Ashley Johnson, and Laura Bailey.
The Last of Us Part II Remastered's graphics will be in native 4K output in Fidelity Mode, 1440p upscale to 4K in Performance Mode, an Unlocked Framerate option for TVs that support VRR, increased texture resolution, increased Level-of-Detail distances, improved shadow quality, animation sampling rate, and more. This will all make the game look and run beautifully as long as your TV can support but if you have bought a PS5, your TV most likely can.
The Last Us Part II Remastered will have improved loading times thanks to the power of the PS5, but I have to say I didn't mind the ever-changing loading screen from the previous version.
Pre-orders will be available on December 5th for the standard as well as the The Last of Us Part II Remastered W.L.F Edition, which like The Last of Us Part I, will only be available in select markets (United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Benelux, Italy, Spain, Portugal, and Austria). Once again, it doesn't look like Canada will get the W.L.F Edition like we didn't get the Firefly Edition of The Last of Us Part 1.
Very good news for existing owners of The Last of Us Part II on PS4 digital versions and disc versions is for only $10 USD, you can upgrade to The Last of Us Part II Remastered. You will need a PS5 with a disc drive to upgrade the disc version of The Last of Us Part II.
